I often get asked whether it’s truly possible to capture beautiful family photos outdoors with a 3–4 month old baby. My answer is always the same: 100% yes! With a little flexibility, gentle pacing, and the right approach, outdoor family sessions with young babies can be just as meaningful and beautiful as any other.
This particular session took place during my fall mini session season, and it’s one of my favorites. I had the joy of photographing a wonderful family of four—plus their pup! With a 3-month-old baby, an energetic toddler, two loving parents, and a furry family member, this session was full of life, movement, and connection.
At this age, babies are often content being held close, which creates naturally intimate images. Snuggles, gentle kisses, and quiet moments between parents and baby translate beautifully in photos. Add in the warmth of fall light, soft seasonal colors, and natural surroundings, and you have the perfect recipe for timeless family portraits.
Of course, sessions with little ones are always baby-led. We take breaks as needed, move at a relaxed pace, and let moments unfold naturally. Toddlers get space to explore, parents get to simply be present, and the result is a gallery full of genuine emotion—not stiff poses.
This session was a perfect reminder that you don’t need to wait for the “perfect” age to schedule family photos. Every stage is worth documenting, even the ones that feel a little unpredictable. With patience, experience, and a calm approach, outdoor family photos with a young baby can be both stress-free and incredibly rewarding.
If you’ve been wondering whether an outdoor family session with your newborn or young baby is possible, let this be your sign—it absolutely is. These fleeting moments deserve to be captured, just as they are.
